Google's Android and Apple's iOS, which is only run on the company's iPhone, continue to pace the smartphone operating system market, according to a new report from the NPD Group.

In the second quarter, Android accounted for 52 percent of all smartphone units sold, while Apple checked in at 29 percent. Research In Motion's BlackBerry OS saw its market share fall to 11 percent.

Among handset manufacturers, the report acknowledged that the pending acquisition by Google could help boost Motorola Mobility. According to NPD, Motorola's smartphone market share fell to 12 percent from 15 percent, due in large part to increased competition from Samsung and LG.

"Closer ties to the heart of Android can help inspire new paths to differentiation," Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis for NPD, said of Motorola's outlook.

The latest market report from comScore revealed similar results for Android. According to that study, Google's mobile OS commanded 38.1 percent of the smartphone platform market in the three-month period ending in May. Apple had 26.6 percent share.
