Videoconferencing gaining popularity for enterprise mobility

2 Sep 2011

As the technology matures, and the use of smartphones and tablets increases, many mobile professionals around the world are embracing videoconferencing while they are out of the office.

In a recent interview with ZDNet, one expert stated that the trend is the next big thing for enterprise mobility, and user buy-in and technology advancements will both help accelerate the adoption of mobile videoconferencing.

"As more videoconferencing-ready mobile devices and smartphones arrive, technology will become much more pervasive than what it is today, [which] is mainly tied down to room systems and desktop," Subha Rama, enterprise communications senior analyst at ABI Research, told ZDNet.

Companies should keep in mind that videoconferencing may cause data usage to skyrocket. Experts agree that the use of a mobile device management solution will help keep any associated costs within budget requirements.

A greater desire for videoconferencing solutions may also influence the design of smartphones. According ABI Research, 93 percent of the smartphones on the market in 2016 will feature touchscreens. Five years ago, 7 percent of devices fell into this category.
